Angus Myles: Sound Technician

What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Angus Myles. I was born in Carleton Place, Ontario. I currently reside in Toronto.

What is your trade?
I am a Front of House Sound Technician and Tour Manager.

How long have you been doing what you do?
7 years. 4 years of steady touring. Before that I worked for several production companies and at a venue as their house tech.

Who are you currently on tour with?
I’m in between bands at the moment. I’ve spent the last year and a half touring the US, Canada and UK with Priestess. They’ve taken a break from touring to record their sophomore record. So, I’ve been looking to book up the rest of the summer and fall months while taking some time to enjoy the warm weather.

What advice would you give to someone starting out doing what you do?
I’ve toured mixing the supporting acts with a lot of really high profile bands such as NIN, Queens of the Stone Age, Megadeth, The Cult, Black Label Society, Mastodon and a few others and learned so much from their FOH techs. Watch the guys that mix these huge bands, they’ve been in the business a long time and are total pros. Listen to their sound checks and mixes during show-time, try to be a fly on the wall while watching them work. Guaranteed you’ll pick some cool stuff up.

Of course it’s also important to know your frequencies and how to keep your gain structure in check. While on tour… Eat your greens! Stay healthy.

Best part of touring?
There are so many. Getting to see so much of the world while doing what you love. Getting to make friends in different cities, states, countries, etc. is really great.

Worst part of touring?
Never having enough sleep or clean underwear and socks. Touring during winter is rough. Load-ins during blizzards and freezing cold temperatures is never a really good time.

What are you listening to?
I just picked up Ray Lamontange - Till the Sun Turns Black, a really cool disc produced by Ethan Johns. He did a lot of Ryan Adams’ music. Final Fantasy – He Poos Clouds is another really interesting disc I recently picked up. Arcade Fire, Big Business, T.Rex... the list goes on and on.

Any last words?
This site is great! There’s a few techs on here I keep running into while on tour. See you soon at FOH in a venue near you. Work hard, enjoy yourself!.
